10 Fruits You Don’t Need to Buy Organic

July 13, 2015 by Susan Wilking Horan Leave a Comment

Fruit BowlWelcome everyone! It’s time for another WHAT’S ON THE #MENUMONDAY – and today is the last installment of our FIVE PART SERIES on Organic Produce!

Over the last month, we’ve discussed the term “organic” and what it really means. We’ve researched and listed the ten WORST veggies with the highest level of pesticide residue, the ten BEST veggies with the lowest level of pest res – and similarly, the ten WORST fruits. Now, we end our series with the TOP TEN BEST FRUITS – those that we never have to buy organic.

Remember, our list is a compilation of several other sources. And, the produce on our list appeared the most often on everyone else’s list! Here, each item is listed in order from the best fruit with the least amount of pest res, to that which may retain a little more – but, again – not to any level that is considered dangerous. So, here we go!

  • Pineapple
  • Papaya
  • Kiwis
  • Cantaloupe
  • Watermelon
  • Honeydew Melon
  • Grapefruit
  • Mangos
  • Bananas
  • Cranberries

And, there they are! The top ten fruits that no one has to buy organic! And, just like their veggie counterparts, these products only retain trace amounts of pest res if any at all.

Why is that? Well remember, some produce simply is not attractive or particularly tasty to bugs. When that’s the case, the produce requires less chemical spraying – even when traditionally farmed. Also, the structure of the produce may help protect its edible parts — like pineapple, watermelon and bananas — which have very thick skins.

So, let’s wrap up this series with just a few parting tips:

First, for those of us with compromised immune systems due to past or present illnesses, buying organic produce all the time may be a good idea. You see, doing so may help insure we don’t add any additional burden to our already overloaded systems. Second, we all need to wash produce thoroughly before eating it — whether it’s organic or not.

And, that’s it everyone — the conclusion to our FIVE PART SERIES ON ORGANIC PRODUCE!

So enjoy the bounty of summer! Thanks for joining me and until next time, EAT WELL and BE WELL!
