It’s time for another #FACTUALFRIDAY everyone! And today, we’re going to discuss THE BLUES — not the music, not the emotion — but the light!
So first, let’s recognize the fairly rare and incredible phenomenon that will occur tonight! Our second full moon in the month of July! Now if you remember our earlier discussion, the first full moon occurred, appropriately, on the first of July. And today, on the last day of the month, we will have another full moon — and when we have two full moons in the same month, the second one is referred to as a Blue Moon.
Now, will tonight’s full moon actually be blue?? Not necessarily. That will depend upon the prevailing atmospheric conditions. For example, particles of dust or smoke can give the moon a bluish appearance.
But, everything we discussed about the first full moon remains the same for tonight’s full moon. And, one of those things was that light at night can be disruptive. It can interfere with our sleep patterns by decreasing our brain’s production of melatonin — the sleep hormone. This can result in insomnia, fatigue and perhaps even depression.
But what’s really interesting is that light during the day may be interfering with our good health as well. Especially that particular wavelength of the color spectrum known as Blue Light.
You see, all living creatures have a built-in biological clock that controls the periods of activity and inactivity. And although this mechanism or circadian rhythm is an internal function, it also is influenced by external factors — such as light — specifically blue light.
And, here’s the problem: We are surrounded by blue light all day long. It’s the kind of light that’s emitted from fluorescent overhead lights and energy-saving LED light bulbs, computers, I Pads and cell phones. Indeed, those of us who spend hours on our computers every day — or work in an office setting all week — are literally being bombarded by blue light throughout the day and often into the night.
So, if this sounds like you — and if you’re not sleeping well at night or feeling somewhat fatigued during the day — you might want to try this: glasses with blu-tech lenses. Similar to the ones we’ve seen for years that have the amber-colored light-filtering lenses, the new ones are clear and can easily be worn comfortably indoors or out. They’re great for working on computers or for working at night. They’re a perfect replacement for regular reading glasses and are available in prescription form or not.
So, why not talk to your optometrist or ophthalmologist? See if such glasses might be right for you. You just may feel better, sleep better and be more productive during the day — all while protecting your eyes and your overall health!
Thanks for joining me everyone! And, until next time,
