As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So, let’s start it off with something exciting and inspiring! How many of you have ever heard of a man named Ken Wright? Not too many? Well, let’s try another question. What does a submarine in murky water have in common with a woman’s breast? Still no answer? Ok, let’s explain.
First, Ken Wright is an accomplished technological visionary and inventor. His contributions have changed and improved countless designs in industry and product development. He helped develop the first full-motion teleconferencing system. AND the first mobile satellite news vehicles. AND the first portable zinc-air fuel cell. His designs span industries from automotive to aerospace to underwater exploration. Indeed, he has developed technical systems for everything from movie-making and the film Titanic, to underwater laser scanning systems for deep sea U.S. Navy submarines. WHEW!!
And this, my friends, brings us to the second question. For you see, when Mr. Wright was developing the advanced technology that allowed these deep sea submarines to see through murky water and discern different materials and properties of objects on the ocean floor, a light went off! He realized the same technology might be used to navigate the dense tissues of the human female breast. So, he modified his submarine technology. He used harmless low level light known as photons to look into the breast and detect specific differences or anomalies within the tissue. Then Mr. Wright captured this technology in a small, hand-held device that he dubbed The Eclipse.
The Eclipse is simple to use. While holding the device in her hand, a woman slides it over her breast in an overlapping pattern. This produces a series of high-resolution (easy to see) deep tissue images that can detect potential problems. It mimics the human touch of a self-breast exam but is about five times more sensitive than fingers. So, small masses that might otherwise go undetected can be found. How amazing!!! And, the technology is in the process of becoming available to women the world over, giving us another valuable weapon for our arsenal in our war with breast cancer!
So, please join me in thanking Mr. Wright – and his wife and daughter who served as his inspiration. THANK YOU! And, ladies, THANK YOU as well for your courage and commitment to Breast Cancer Awareness Month – and to making this world a better and healthier place for yourselves, your mothers, your daughters, your sisters and your friends everywhere!
