Hello everyone! When we last connected it was Labor Day and summer was coming to an end. And indeed, as the autumnal equinox occurred last night on September 22 at approximately 10:00 PM in the northern hemisphere, summer now is officially over and autumn has officially arrived.
Technically, autumn is one of the four temperate seasons when temperatures become cooler, leaves begin to change color and night falls noticeably earlier. It’s a time associated with gathering the bounty of the summer growing season — a time punctuated by many cultures with harvest festivals and celebrations of thanksgiving. It also is a time to reflect upon the interdependence of one season to another. We gather the autumn harvest which allows the soil to rest fallow during the winter. Once rested, we plant the soil with seeds in the spring. In the summer, the seeds take root and grow in abundance. Until we once again reach the autumn harvest — and the cycle begins again. Each season is different — yet each is dependent upon the others.
I am reminded that just like the seasons of the year, the different areas of our lives are dependent upon one another. Last week I had the privilege of doing a radio interview with the wonderful Dr. Jo Anne White of Power Your Life Talk Radio. Listen Here AND, I had the pleasure of doing this interview with my good friend Mary Buffett. Now, Mary has written several best-sellers on financial philosophies and investment strategies. Her area of expertise is wealth, and my area of expertise is health. And together, we have developed a “Health and Wealth” series of talks in which we speak about our different fields — and discuss the ways in which they are connected to and complement one another.
You see, health and wealth are subjects that overlap one another in many ways. When I speak of health, I’m not just speaking of physical health. I’m also speaking of mental health, spiritual health and social health — each one of which leads to a healthy interaction with all the facets of one’s life. When Mary speaks of wealth, she’s not just speaking of money in one’s wallet. She’s also speaking of wealth in terms of social, personal, mental and physical abundance.
In essence, we are taking slightly different paths to reach the same destination. And to this end, the building blocks of health and wealth are the same. Our mantra is, “Inch by inch, it’s a cinch.” In building a strong foundation to good health, we start small. Those of you who know me understand this approach. I emphasize five easy steps that anyone can take today — in order to protect their health tomorrow. In building a strong foundation to wealth, again we start small. Mary emphasizes five simple tips anyone can begin today to build upon tomorrow. For, this is the path to empowerment. Tiny steps — small changes — that over time, accumulate to create a life of wholeness and wellness! As the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu stated, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”
It’s amazing how the philosophy of developing one discipline mirrors that of another. It’s amazing how much control we really have over our lives. And, it’s amazing how health and wealth are so connected to one another — and like the seasons of the year — are interdependent and complementary.
Mary and I are looking forward to continuing our series of “Health and Wealth” — and to connecting with our audiences on such a fundamental and important level. Until the next time, may you have a bountiful autumn in every respect!
