Thanksgiving and the Health Benefits of Turkey

November 26, 2014 by Susan Wilking Horan Leave a Comment

Talking Turkey,  Movember and Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving Turkey For the Gentlemen today — November also is known as Movember!! This is the month in which men around the world can engage in a month-long marathon of growing out their facial hair for charity. It’s the month of the mustache! Indeed, Movember is one of the most successful programs focusing on men’s health. And, the one million participants last year raised $120 million for a variety of charities worldwide. So congratulations to all of you who are participating this year!

November also is the month that signals the beginning of the winter holidays. Thanksgiving is right around the corner — and in honor of the feast that so many of us will be enjoying — let’s talk a little turkey!

Last month we explored the power of the pumpkin. But, did you know that turkey — the traditional menu choice for this particular holiday — also is one of the best low calorie, high protein meats we can eat?  Turkey is a wonderful, inexpensive source of  minerals and nutrients including zinc, phosphorus, iron, potassium and a boatload of B vitamins.  Now, most nutritionists suggest we consume approximately a  3  1/2 ounce portion for each serving. But because most of us don’t weigh our food before eating it, learn to “eye ball” your portions. In this case, one serving will be about the size and thickness of a deck of playing cards.

Also remember, that the white meat of a turkey has less fat and fewer calories than the dark meat. And, of course, consuming the skin will add approximately thirty more calories and nearly double the fat to each serving. (Sorry about that.) 🙂

But, as always, moderation is the key to success — even with food. So, try to keep protein portions balanced — load up on veggies — and keep your intake of the higher fat foods to a minimum. In this way we can insure overall health and wellness throughout the holiday season! And that’s something to be thankful for!

Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving!
