HAPPY & HEALTHY CELEBRATING
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Blog. May is always a busy month and Mother’s Day is one of the most celebrated holidays of not just May, but of the year. And after many of us spent the last two years away from our loved ones, celebrating this Mother’s Day is especially important.
In case you didn’t know, the concept of honoring motherhood actually dates back to ancient Egypt. The Egyptian goddess Isis was believed to be the mother of the mythological ruler of Egypt, Horus. In turn, Isis became known as the “mother of all pharaohs” and each year celebrations were held in her honor marking the beginning of our traditional Mother’s Day.
Here in the United States our official Mother’s Day was the creation of a schoolteacher named Anna Jarvis. According to American Enterprise magazine, she believed that on the anniversary of her mother’s death, which was May 10, all Americans should honor the women who gave them birth. The United States government agreed and officially recognized Mother’s Day by an Act of Congress in 1905.
Accordingly, this Blog is devoted to all our mothers and four fabulous and healthy gift ideas.
PUTTING HEALTH FIRST
Mother’s Day is the perfect time to say, “I love you and I want you to be around for a long, long time!”
So, why not schedule a preventative cancer screening test for your mother, sister, daughter or friend? Perhaps a full body check with your dermatologist — or a mammogram at the local clinic or medical center?
For ladies, this is something you could do together. Make a day of it, spend time with one another and share the experience of doing something important while enjoying each other’s company. It’s a gift that can help ensure you and your loved ones spend not just this holiday together, but many future holidays as well.
MASSAGE TO THE RESCUE
Who doesn’t love a massage? Beyond simple relaxation, a massage offers many health benefits, including the reduction of anxiety and stress by lowering the levels of cortisol by up to 50 percent. It also can increase the production of neurotransmitters in our brain that help reduce depression and elevate our mood.
Massage is very effective in reducing body aches and pains, headaches and even migraines. It can support and improve our immune system, reduce stiffness or soreness and improve sleep.
And happily, there are many different types of massage from which to choose, including full body massage, foot massage, head massage, pregnancy massage, hot stone massage and sports massage — just to name a few. It’s so easy to tailor-make the perfect massage for anyone on your gift list.
DON’T FORGET A SWEET TREAT
How about something sweet, chocolate and healthy? And yes, we can have all three at the same time with a few chocolate-covered strawberries.
Both strawberries and chocolate are super foods that are packed with healthy benefits. Strawberries are one of the best sources of vitamins A and C, fiber, calcium, iron and potassium. And chocolate — especially dark chocolate – contains magnesium and theobromine which increase our “feel good” chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. This dynamic duo reduces stress, increases energy, improves brain function and makes us feel, well, downright good. And, both are loaded with antioxidant flavanols, which help prevent a number of cancers and fight damage from free radicals.
This is the perfect gift guaranteed to deliver flavor, enjoyment and health benefits.
FLOWERS, OF COURSE
Nothing says, “I love you” more than a gift of flowers. We all have our favorites, of course, yet it’s nice to know that different colored flowers have wonderful health benefits for us as well.
In addition to their wonderful beauty and great aroma, cheerful yellow flowers can help one feel happy, friendly and optimistic. Blue flowers can create feelings of calm, serenity and relaxation. Vibrant orange can bring enthusiasm, energy and joy. Red, of course, can inspire romantic love, strength and courage. And pink blooms symbolize playfulness, gentleness and grace.
Whether it’s a single flower or an intricate bouquet, either one can do double duty by expressing feelings of and creating wonderful emotions in the one giving the gift and the one receiving. It’s a win/win situation!
In any event, I’m sure we’ll all find the perfect gift for the mothers in our lives to make this Mother’s Day happy, healthy and memorable.
Thanks again everyone for joining me. Until next time, stay safe, stay in GOOD HEALTH and . . .
