MEN’S HEALTH AND MOVEMBER
Hi everyone and welcome to FACTUAL FRIDAY.
We are well into the month of November, which brings with it the beginning of the holiday season and for many of us, Thanksgiving.
But in case you don’t already know, it also brings with it an international awareness of MEN’S HEALTH, because this month also is MOVEMBER.
Now, Movember first began in 2003 when a group of 30 friends in Australia challenged each other to stop shaving and grow their mustaches for an entire month. When the group realized their idea began to spark conversations, the men decided to associate their efforts with a worthy cause – men’s health with prostate cancer, testicular cancer, depression and suicide in particular.
Today this movement has grown from its humble beginnings of 30 participants to over five million, and the Movember Foundation has raised over seven million dollars funding several different health projects for men.
It’s a wonderful cause and it’s easy to participate! Some men choose to donate a dollar or two for every day in November they don’t shave. Some donate the money they would have spent on shaving materials during November to the Foundation.
In any case, just the simple act of growing a mustache always seems to spark conversation, questions and comments, which present the perfect opportunity to tell others about Movember and its goals.
And to kick start those conversations, here are a few fun facts about mustaches that may surprise you and your friends.
- In Eureka, Nevada, it is illegal for men with mustaches to kiss a woman.
- The first mustache was depicted in 300 B.C. on an artifact showing an Iranian horseman with a thick, black mustache.
- There are between 10,000 and 20,000 hairs on the average man’s face, and a mustache takes up about 600 of those.
- The King of Hearts is the only King in a deck of cards without a mustache.
- In India some states pay their police bonuses to grow a mustache because they believe a mustache commands more respect.
- For 50 years, Albert Einstein was never seen without his mustache.
And there we have just a few conversation starters for you to share with all your friends this Movember.
Remember, when you participate in this movement the fundraising options are endless and are only limited by your own creativity.
So, while you’re breaking the silence and stigma that surround the issues of men’s health, you can also have a little fun. Enjoy yourself as you educate those around you. Have a good time while you spread the good word and raise money for a good cause!
Be the reason for which someone else is grateful this month. Have a Happy Movember everyone and thanks for joining me.
Until next time, stay in GOOD HEALTH and . . .
